Early Intervention Supports your Child’s Development

In the first 2 years of life babies form 1 million new synaptic connections . . . not per hour . . . not per minute . . . but per second (Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University).

It is during this period that a baby’s experiences have the greatest potential to shape the developing brain.

Infants (0-12 months)

What social-communication delays can look like at this age

  • Looking at objects more than people
  • Lack of reciprocal smiles or responding to name
  • Unusual or odd repetitive behaviours
  • Limited use of gestures & vocalizations
  • Pulling or leading others

What we can do to help

  • Parent Coaching – simple interactions in activities you are already doing each day with your baby create the learning opportunities needed to support brain development. Through parent coaching, learn to support your child’s early social interaction and communication skills.
  • Infant playgroup (coming soon!)

Early signs of autism and social communication difficulties can be identified by as early as 4-6 months

Other resources:

  • Baby navigator
  • M-Chat, SORF
  • Bring up concerns with your GP as soon as possible, as there can be delays to see a pediatrician and access an assessment

What we can do to help

  • Parent Coaching link to parent coaching page- early social interaction skills, speech and communication development, emotion regulation skills, and specific routines or issues that may be challenging (e.g., bolting when out in the community, difficulty eating at a restaurant, resisting diaper changes, etc.)
  • Parent and Toddler Playgroup link to parent and toddler group page – learn skills and strategies in a social environment with other parents and children
  • Early Intervention program link to early intervention page – our ESDM Early intervention program is ideal for young children to provide structured, evidence based learning opportunities to give children the skills they need to thrive in the world.

Early detection and intervention can have a lifetime impact on children’s outcomes. Autism can be reliably diagnosed by 18 months of age.

Symptoms grow in severity over time without intervention

Benefits of Early Intervention

  • Young children’s brains are highly adaptable and responsive to new experiences. Intervening early takes advantage of this plasticity, helping children develop crucial skills during a period when they’re most capable of change.
  • Early support can enhance a child’s developmental path, improving cognitive, social, and emotional skills
  • Addressing issues early can prevent them from becoming more severe. This can reduce the need for intensive therapies or special education services later in life
  • Early intervention also provides parents and caregivers with tools, resources, and support to understand and assist their child’s development.

By focusing on early support, we can give children the best chance to reach their full potential and build a foundation for a successful future.
